(pronounced kadoo) is an old gaelic word for tartan. Mary Buchanan
is a multi-talented, designer and seamstress, hand-making a range
of exquisitely detailed traditional rag dolls, Harris Tweed teddy
bears, highland clansmen, bothy boots, scarves and now Harris
Tweed slippers. All items are made to order.

Wonderful sub-tropical garden in NW Scotland on the shores of Loch
Ewe. Begun in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie whose vision transformed
it from a bare moorland promontory. Although this northerly garden
is on the same latitide as St. Petersburg, Russia, its climate is
unique due to the proximity of the warming gulf stream. Inverewe
has collections of Himalayan, New Zealand and Chilean plants.

Leckmelm Shrubbery and Arboretum, Little Leckmelm,

The arboretum, planted in the 1870s, is full of splendid
and rare trees, specie rhododendrons, azaleas and shrubs. Warmed
by the Gulf Stream, this tranquil woodland setting has an alpine
garden and paths which lead down to the shore of Loch Broom.

This excellent little museum is housed in converted
farm buildings and aims to explain and interpret the local culture
and Gaelic language. The displays include archaeological finds and
history of the area. Also has some great reconstructed interiors
of a croft house room, schoolroom, shop, and the interior of the
local lighthouse. The museum has won several awards over the last
few years.

The
Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve

Loch Maree, Ross Shire. Beinn Eighe
(pron. Ben Ay) mountain is situated by the very beautiful Loch
Maree. This area is protected, being one of the few areas of Scotland
left with the ancient Caledonian forest. There are 2 walks -a
mountain trail and a lower level nature trail.
Mountain Trail: Allow 3.5 to 4 hours for this
steep but rewarding walk/climb of approx. 1800ft with fabulous
views across Loch Maree. Reasonable fitness needed. Also essential
to have stout boots and warm and waterproof clothing.
Nature Trail: An
informative nature trail guides you along the lower slopes of
Beinn Eighe, taking you through various habitats along with information
pointers on flora and fauna. Allow about 1 hour for this walk.
It can be steep in places and muddy so wear stout shoes/boots.

Knockan Crag Nature Reserve is renowned internationally as one
of the most important sites for understanding how the landscape
of Northern Britain was formed.
The rocks here tell of ancient oceans, vast deserts and ice sheets
and the story is told using poetry, sculpture, interactive demonstrations
and cartoons.
